1000 Things We Hate #190: Holes in Socks

9 10 2011

I have a special pair of socks.  Back in the day when I believed in superstition, I would wear these special socks for good luck on tests and what not.  They are covered in poison dart frogs.  Hence, their name being “Froggy Socks.”  Because I am that damn original.

Well, I’ve had these socks since 3rd grade (like a handful of other clothing that surprisingly still fits (yeah, I know, my body’s ridiculous)).  So, naturally, the wear and tear have taken them down from “pristine” to plain old “shitty.”  Truly, it is a disappointing process.

However, the more likely situation you may encounter with holes in socks is when you just bought some really warm, wool socks for the winter.  Then, three months later, they are thin and tearing.  Mind you, you paid $15 for a pack of three.  That would be $60 a year at that rate.  That is going through way too many socks way too fast.

After covering the economic costs, let’s focus on the emotional toll having holes in your socks causes.

  • They make you feel desparate
  • They make you feel poor
  • You easily become disheartened
  • Your entirely self-conscious
  • They make you feel like death

Trailblazer

Just putting on socks with holes in them is super weird.  You can feel both the tearing mesh and the inside of your shoe at the same time.  There’s this strange film between them.  And the temperature effect!  The hole area will be drastically colder than your covered spots.  Not to mention the feeling of your toe sticking through one of the holes and having the nail scrape the inside of your shoe.

So, what can we so about this sock issue!?  I suppose research helps – finding the right socks with lasting power for a decent price.  If you find a 3-pack for $30 and the socks will last 5 years, buy them.  Or, sometimes it’s just by chance.  I bought some black socks from Wal-Mart (#ashamed) in an 8-pack or something for $15, and all of them have lasted for a year and a half so far.  Just because you really like your socks for the first couple of times you wear them does not mean you should continue wearing them if they get holes so quickly and easily.  Longevity is key.

Socks have been on our minds… a lot.  Check out our post about wet socks here and socks with sandals here.  While you’re in the neighborhood, you can also make your eyes peep at boots with socks showing, missing socks, and mismatched socks.
