1000 Things We Hate #201: Etc.

11 11 2011

I love terrible photoshop skills, don't you!?

This hate has been boiling inside of me for such a long time.  In fact, this is one of the original hates to spawn the whole concept of 1000 Things We Hate.  I’m not quite sure why I’ve held off on it for such a long time.  BECAUSE IT IS DESPICABLE!

I’ve already shown that I have a problem with words and phrases such as: the skinning the cat phrase, the you know phrase, I don’t know, otay, the -gate suffix, the Monday excuse, and many others.

So, what’s new with me whipping out a whole new one?  New/Old – New/Old – New/Old.  I’d like to think that this is all old and that everyone should know this… but some people are fucking stupid.

“Okay, what’s the deal with Etc.?”
“Well,” I reply, “how the fuck do you pronounce it!?”

9/10, they are going to pronounce it “ex-set-er-uh.”  WHERE THE FUCK IS THE X!?, I ask you.  Is it hidden!? [at this point imagine me peering around the corner of a hallway searching for the lost ‘x’ of Yanoutha]

Wait… that’s right, THERE IS NO X.

YOU PRONOUNCE IT “et-set-er-uh.”  Because, get this, the Latin is spelled “etcetera” not “excetera”.  ET- people not Ex-.

So, we’re talking and you’re like “yaddayaddamypetbeetlegotcrushedbyasphynxtodayexcetera,” then I will get instantly pissed off.  Seriously, I’ve had professors pronounce this wrong and I instantly look down upon them.

Sure, it’s an easy mistake.  And, for god’s sake, it’s Latin.  Therefore, it must be excusable.  WRONG!  IT IS NOT!  YOU ARE THE STUPIDEST PERSON I’VE EVER MET AT THIS VERY MOMENT!

Exactly.

Oh, and for Monique’s bemusement, there was a Cat in Cats named Etcetera:

Charming

I’m sure Monique would enjoy harpooning Etcetera and putting her on a spit.  Then, Monique can shove the toasted remains of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s into Etcetera as stuffing!

IN FACT, maybe this should be the punishment for EVERYONE who mispronounces this silly little piece of Latin!

This bothers me too! Another thing that gets on my nerves is when people type “ect.” instead of “etc.”
